At Maboneng Township Arts Experience, we have always believed in the transformative power of art and its ability to intersect with science, technology, and exploration. For over a decade, we’ve championed the idea that creativity is not confined to galleries, but rather extends into communities, industries, and fields of discovery that shape the future.
Our journey into bridging arts and sciences began long before “innovation” became a buzzword. As an organization deeply rooted in community development and township rejuvenation, we recognized early on that art and science share a common language: curiosity, experimentation, and the desire to push boundaries. It was this realization that led us to participate in one of the most significant global scientific initiatives of our time: the International Polar Year (IPY).
Polar Explorations: Expanding Horizons Beyond Boundaries

In 2007, under the banner of ITASC (International Trans Antarctic Scientific Expedition), our director Siphiwe Ngwenya and creative team embarked on an ambitious collaboration to integrate artistic expression into one of the world’s most challenging environments—the Antarctic. As part of this effort, we supported the design and development of innovative, sustainable solutions for remote research environments, including the creation of off-grid living systems that fused art with cutting-edge engineering.
This was not just about surviving in extreme climates; it was about thriving—bringing creativity to a space where it had never been before. Our work with ITASC contributed to the creation of mobile laboratories, which balanced functionality with cultural significance. By embedding elements of township-inspired design, we demonstrated how localized, resourceful creativity could play a role on a global stage. This project was groundbreaking for us, and it cemented our belief that township innovation has a role to play in scientific advancement.
As an extension of this project, we documented our experiences through storytelling, film, and art installations. This provided a unique lens for both scientific and artistic communities to engage with the Antarctic, not just as a place of research, but as a cultural and creative frontier.
Maboneng's Vision for Arts and Sciences

Today, as the Maboneng Township Arts Experience, we continue to integrate the ethos of that journey into our work. While our core focus remains on the arts, we have expanded our interests to include marine, aviation, and space innovation, leveraging our creative roots to push boundaries in technology and sustainability.
- Marine Science and Conservation: Inspired by our work in the Antarctic, we are exploring ways to engage communities in coastal areas with the importance of marine ecosystems. Through creative education programs and art installations, we aim to connect people with the urgency of preserving our oceans.
- Aviation and Space Exploration: Our team is actively working on innovative projects to empower township youth by exposing them to careers in aviation and space technology. We are currently conceptualizing workshops and collaborations to design low-cost, high-impact tools for data collection in aerospace and climate research.
Through these initiatives, we are laying the foundation for the next generation of township innovators—equipped not only with technical skills but also with the creative thinking needed to solve global challenges.
Why Funders Should Invest in Us

Our track record speaks for itself: from transforming township homes into art galleries, to designing systems that operate in one of the harshest climates on Earth, Maboneng has consistently delivered projects that blend creativity, science, and community impact.
We are uniquely positioned to expand on this legacy:
- Community-Centered Innovation: Our projects are deeply rooted in the needs of local communities, ensuring that the impact is both meaningful and sustainable.
- Proven Interdisciplinary Approach: Our ability to combine arts with science and technology allows us to develop unique solutions that address complex challenges.
- Global Reach, Local Heart: From the Antarctic to Johannesburg, our work has always been about connecting global innovation with local relevance.
A Partnership for Progress

We are calling on organizations like the African Institute of Space Innovation (AISI) and other forward-thinking institutions to join us in this journey. By supporting Maboneng Township Arts Experience, you are investing in a vision that brings township creativity to the forefront of scientific exploration and technological innovation.
Together, we can develop the next wave of projects that inspire change, bridge disciplines, and empower communities. Let’s take the spirit of innovation further—into the oceans, the skies, and beyond.
